Tomorrow, May 1, 2011, Benedict XVI beatify his predecessor John Paul II. Since its announcement, this beatification has caused distress and surprise in important sectors of the Catholic Church. I understand the discomfort, if not a few of the actions of John Paul II was anything but exemplary and imitated as expected of a person who rises to the altar and presented as a model of virtue for Christians. I mean his authoritarian manner of conducting the Church, its moral rigor, given the repressive treatment of theologians and theologians who disagreed with the Magisterium, many of whom were expelled of his lectures and his works subject to censorship, "to silence and even complicity proved in cases of pedophilia, especially with the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, Marcial Maciel, who always gave preferential treatment with the blessing of Cardinal Ratzinger, his right arm, and so on.
The key to the beatification of Wojtyla is the appreciation of his successor, Ratzinger
With these last two popes have been moved from the Church people of God to the Church pyramidal
What is not justified is the surprise meeting. With this beatification, Pope Benedict XVI has not done anything to put into practice the old saying is well born to be thankful. Karol Wojtyla's elevation to the rank of blessed is the best show of appreciation that could render to his predecessor, who appointed him head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and gave him absolute power in matters of doctrine, moral and administrative. Moreover, it was John Paul II who paved the way for naming successor in pectore. How does the current Pope was not going to beatify the author of upward mobility size church?
If it were not for John Paul II, Joseph Ratzinger would now archbishop emeritus no relevance. But fate decreed that the Polish pope German Archbishop called him and appoint him as Inquisitor of the Faith, that the life of Cardinal Ratzinger gave a complete turnaround. For nearly a quarter of a century was the most powerful official in the Roman curia through whose hands passed the most important issues of the Catholic world, from the control of the doctrine to cases of pedophilia on which decreed the utmost secrecy, imposing victims and executioners a silence that made him an accomplice and accessory after the fact of horrendous crimes against defenseless people.
John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger lived an affair for nearly five decades with a distribution of roles that always followed. The first actor-minded from his youth, he served that role to perfection, became one of the great actors of the twentieth century and received the applause of millions of viewers around the world from his papal election to his funeral. The second held the role for which he was specially trained, the ideologue and writer of the work that played to represent the pope and wrote down interview in the book The Ratzinger Report, whose central idea was the restoration of the Church Catholic.
The script included the revision of Vatican II and the reversal of the Catholic Church, the restoration of papal authority, devalued in the post-conciliar period, the affirmation of Catholic dogma, the new evangelization, the re-Christianization of Europe, the return to tradition halting the liturgical reform, the denominational policy and culture, defense of traditional morality in all its rigidity in matters which hitherto were the subject of much debate inside and outside of Catholicism, such as family, marriage , sexuality, the beginning and end of life, and so on. Church
The picture described by Cardinal Ratzinger in an interview with Vittorio Messori, later published as a book under the abovementioned title The Ratzinger Report, could not be more bleak: "It is undeniable that the past 20 years have been decisively detrimental to the Catholic Church. The results that have followed seem to oppose the council hopes cruelly of all, beginning with Pope John XXIII and then those of Paul VI. Christians are, again, a minority, more than any other time since late antiquity. The Popes and the Council Fathers were expecting a new Catholic unity and division that has occurred which, in the words of Paul VI has gone from self-criticism to self-destruction. Expecting a new enthusiasm, and has too often ended in boredom and discouragement. We were expecting a leap forward, and we have met with a progressive process of decadence that has developed largely under the sign of the alleged spirit of the Council, thereby causing its discredit. "
Within the script came the change in the policy of appointing bishops without which could not be carried out the restoration church designed in unison by John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger. Gradually, the bishops were replaced by prelates preconciliar council, the bishops committed to the people gave way to bishops whose main concern was the orthodoxy, the bishops linked to liberation theology gave way to obedience to Rome. This would ensure the success of the new neo-conservative strategy.
Wojtyla and Ratzinger were known since the time of Vatican II, in which both participated, first as bishop, the second as theological advisor Cardinal Joseph Frings, archbishop of Cologne. Wojtyla was aligned with the conservative. Ratzinger side was moderately reformist group. Both gave their support to the Council documents. Therefore expected that subsequently placed in positions of high responsibility Church, put into effect the reforms adopted by Vatican II in the various fields of endeavor ecclesial life and organization of the Church, theology, liturgy, use of historical-critical methods in the study of sacred texts, dialogue with the modern world, the Church's presence in society and, especially, the creation of the "Church of the poor", given Juan Star XXIII. This was not, however, the path followed by John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
When accessed the papacy were slowly dismantling the edifice built by the council fathers between 1962 and 1965 and away from the Church carefully designed project in the four constitutions, nine decrees and three declarations that make up the Council's teaching.
The shift could not be more obvious: it went from the people of God Church and community of believers in the Church hierarchical pyramid, the authoritarian government responsibility, critical thinking one thought, autonomy of temporal realities his consecration, secularization of return religions, the autonomy of the local Church to its control, the hierarchy and the hierarchy serve as an exercise of power, theology and understanding of faith in dialogue with other knowledge to theology as a gloss of the Magisterium of ethics of responsibility to moral rigor, multilateral dialogue anathema.
The beatification of John Paul II is, in my opinion, another example of the way that Benedict XVI has given since the fundamentalist neo-conservatism.
